Cyprus paid tribute to the former mayor of Yeroskipou Michalis Pavlides who died, aged 67, on Wednesday.

Pavlides, who had served as mayor for nine-and-a-half years, resigned in November for health reasons.

Paphos mayor Phaedonas Phaedonos said: “I lost a friend, who left us so much to remember him for. He loved Yeroskipou and the whole Paphos district. We lost a good man and I want to express my condolences to the family,” he said.

Interior Minister Nicos Nouris said on Twitter he was “deeply saddened to learn of the death of the Pavlides, after many months of suffering from an incurable disease.”

“We lost an honest collaborator and a pillar of the community.”

His words were echoed by the Paphos Chamber of Commerce, which published a statement celebrating Pavlides’ achievements while in office.

“He was an honest politician, with a clear vision, who fought with passion and selflessness for Yeroskipou, a place he loved and that loved him back, since he was in charge as mayor for nine and a half years,” the statement said.

A tribute was also published by the Margarita Liasidou Foundation for disabled children, of which Pavlides was a patron.

“He was always by the side of the foundation, supporting and helping our work, he will be missed,” an announcement said.

Pavlides was born in Yeroskipou in 1955 and after his studies he worked in land development. Before becoming mayor he was a municipal councilor for seven-and-a-half years. He is survived by his wife and three children.

His funeral will take place on Thursday at 2pm at Ayia Paraskevi church in Yeroskipou.
