European University scientists on prestigious academic list

Five European University Cyprus academics have been included in the Top 2 per cent of global sciences citation list.

Citation metrics are widely acknowledged as significant recognition indicators of the impact of research work conducted by academics. In simple terms they reveal the extent to which a research paper or academic text by one academic is cited in other pieces of academic work.

This year’s updated list, released last month, was overseen by the Stanford’s University’s professor John Ioannides using a universal normalisation of citation metrics and generated data lists with the top 100,000 researchers in the world from every scientific discipline. Scientists are classified into 22 scientific fields and 176 subfields.

Five academics from European University Cyprus are this year in the top two per cent of the list. These concern Dr Apostolos Zaravinos, associate professor in the School of Sciences who is included in the list on Oncology & Carcinogenesis; Dr Panagiotis Papageorgis, associate professor and dean in the School of Sciences, also in Oncology and Carcinogenesis; professor Georgios Petrikkos, emeritus professor in the School of Medicine, in Microbiology; professor Spyros Spyrou, from School of Humanities, Social and Education Sciences in Social Work; and Dr Stavros Antoniou, scientific collaborator at the School of Medicine.

Rector of the university professor Andreas Efstathiou congratulated the five academics saying that the inclusion in this prestigious list constituted a very significant achievement and a major recognition of their research.

He received his B.Sc. in Biology from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and his Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology from Boston University School of Medicine. His overall research interests include the elucidation of the molecular events that drive cancer progression at various stages of the metastatic cascade, including dormancy.

Professor Georgios Petrikkos is a Certified Physician in Internal Medicine (IM) and Infectious Disease (ID). He is Emeritus Professor at the National Kapodistrian University of Athens and former Dean, Emeritus Professor and Head of the Advisory Board at the School of Medicine, European University Cyprus.
