Disy: Christodoulides’ comments show contempt for party and democracy

Ruling Disy on Sunday responded to the resignation of Foreign Minister Nicos Christodoulides and his expressed interest in running for president, by saying his comments showed contempt for the party and for democracy.

“Mr Christodoulides was given every opportunity to function within the party that nurtured and promoted him instead of deciding on another course,” the party said in a statement.

It added the choice for party leadership elections was given “where our 51,000 members will choose freely”.

“To characterise such a process as “a jungle and anarchy” is a slip that shows contempt for the grassroots and for democracy,” the party added.

The option for Christodoulides to submit his candidacy on Monday remains open, Disy said but it has never allowed the carpet to be rolled out for opposition Akel “nor will it do so in 2023”.

“We continue united and strong with the conviction that the interest of the homeland passes through a strong and victorious Disy. Our solidarity will again be the best answer,” it concluded.

Disy president Averof Neophytou on Friday upped the pressure on Christodoulides to declare his intentions with a surprise move that effectively refers the choice of candidate to the party base.

He announced that he’d step down as party leader if Christodoulides submitted his name for selection as the party’s presidential candidate by Monday, and hold a leadership election with the winner also being anointed presidential candidate.
