Coronavirus: Changes to release procedures for infected cases

As of Monday, coronavirus cases will be automatically released from self-isolation after ten days by SMS, the health ministry announced on Friday.

The day of infection counts as day zero, and the 10 days start counting the day after that.

So far, confirmed Covid cases had to be released by their personal doctor. This was then followed by an SMS from the health ministry with links to the certificate of recovery that can be used for a SafePass. Because of a surge in cases, there have been reports of short delays before this was sent.

However, as of Monday, the release will be ‘automated’. Infected people will receive text message that would inform them of their release the night before the last day of their self-isolation.

The health ministry clarified the ten days start after the day the person tests positive and not when they show symptoms.

Meanwhile, people who test positive must still inform their personal doctors so they can monitor their health and issue them sick leave.

The self-isolation period may be extended, the ministry said, in cases when the personal doctor considers that self-isolation should be continued due to persistence of symptoms (fever and no improvement in other symptoms two days before release) or in the case of immunosuppressed patients.

Personal doctors, health insurance organisation (HIO) and the Cyprus medical associations have been informed about the revised process.

The announcement preceded a recent decision mandating people who test positive to coronavirus to fill an online form with their contacts to assist the contact tracing unit.

Citing the increased number of cases, the health ministry said people who test positive receive a text message the next day, which includes a link with access codes to a portal where they can confirm their data and declare their contacts for tracing purposes.
